Japan’s International Manga Award 2009
Thai rookie cartoonist Jakraphan Huaypetch won the top prize in this year’s International Manga Award contest. While Chinese, French and South Korean artists bagged the runners-up awards.They will not be given a monetary prize, but he hopes that the award helps the activities of the artists become more publicized overseas.International Manga Award is an award established to encourage non-Japanese mangaka in 2007. This award was created by Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Aso (麻生太郎), who proposed this award in a policy speech he gave in Akihabara (秋葉原) in 2006.
According to a Japanese Foreign Ministry official, the 31-year-old Thai cartoonist was selected for his debut comic ”Super Dunker,” which was published in Thailand in 2008 and featured a rural boy who is talented at street basketball. The ministry received 303 entries from 55 countries and territories worldwide for the award.
The winners will receive their trophies at a ceremony in Tokyo.
