“Kotohajime” is an annual traditional ritual in Kyoto Geisha Hanamachi.
In the ancient capital Kyoto, geiko, or traditional female entertainers, made New Year courtesy calls on their instructors on Dec. 13, 2009.
It is traditional for geiko and maiko, or apprentice geiko, in the city’s Gion district to visit their instructors to express their gratitude for the past year and exchange New Year’s greetings.
The women, dressed in colorful kimono, visited the home of Japanese traditional dance teacher.
The ceremony is one of the annual ”kotohajime” events.
