The first episode of Ryoma den (龍馬伝） aired on Jan.3.
Ryoma den is the 49th NHK Taiga dorama, set in the Bakumatsu period and is the first original taiga series since Mitani Koki’s version of Shinsengumi (新撰組） in 2004.

The story focuses on the life of Ryoma　Sakamoto  (坂本 龍馬), who lived from 1836 to 1867.
Ryoma was a leader of the movement to overthrow the Tokugawa shogunate during the Bakumatsu period in Japan. He was also one of the founders of modern day Japanese navy through incorporation of western technology, which proved to be a force to be reckoned with during the revolution.
