Masaharu Fukuyama

Masaharu Fukuyama

Kohaku Uta Gassen (紅白歌合戦), more commonly known as Kohaku, is an annual music show on New Year’s Eve on NHK.

The honor of performing on Kohaku is strictly by invitation, so only the most successful J-Pop artists and enka singers can perform.

Even today, a performance on Kohaku is said to be a big highlight in a singer’s career because of the show’s large reach.

The so-called “Kohaku effect” – releases getting a sales boost due to their appearance in Kohaku – still applied, though its impact was less visible than usual, at least in the Top 10 rankings.

On the singles chart, #1 was Ayumi Hamasaki’s newly released “You were… / BALLAD,” selling 103,000 copies during the two-week holiday period from just before the new year up until now.

Masaharu Fukuyama (福山 雅治) saw his latest single “Hatsukoi” climb back up to #2, though it was the only Top 10 single to benefit from the “Kohaku effect.”

Fukuyama performed “Hatsukoi” at Kohaku on the New Year’s Eve of 2009. It became his first appearance of the event since his first appearance of 1993.

Ikimono Gakari

Ikimono Gakari

Ikimono Gakari(いきものがかり) retained the #1 ranking on the albums chart.

Their “Hajimari no Uta” continued selling strong with another 161,000 copies.
Ikimono Gakari, a pop-rock band debuted in 1998, also appeared in Kohaku on the New Year’s Eve of 2009.
