NHK has announced the lead for its 2011 taiga drama series. Titled “Gou ~Himetachi no Sengoku~(江~姫たちの戦国~),” the drama will star Juri Ueno and is based on an original script by “Atsuhime (篤姫)” writer Kumiko Tabuchi(田渕久美子).

Juri Ueno (上野 樹里) , born May 25, 1986, is an award-winning actress from Kakogawa, Hyogo Prefecture. She was one of six actors to receive the “Newcomer of the Year” prize at the Japanese Academy Awards in 2005 for her role in Swing Girls.
She is also known for her starring role as the title character in the Nodame Cantabile for which she won “Best Lead Actress” at the 51st Television Drama Academy Awards in 2007.

Ueno will play the role of Gou, also known by other names such as Oeyo and Ogo. She was the third daughter of the daimyo Azai Nagamasa and Oichi-no-kata, the sister of Oda Nobunaga. She was also known for being the wife of Tokugawa Hidetada, the second shogun of the Tokugawa dynasty. Gou’s two older sisters were famous historical figures as well – as the eldest, Yodo, was the wife of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, and the second, Hatsu, was the wife of Kyogoku Takatsugu.
Gou would go onto marry the second shogun Hidetawa Tokugawa and eventually give birth to the third shogun Iemitsu Tokugawa. Gou would also helped create the “Ooku” in Edo, Japan to bring peace and prosperity …

This will be Ueno’s first time acting in a historical drama. “Gou” is NHK’s 50th taiga drama, and only its 10th with a woman as the main character.

I have been watching Taiga Dramas for at least 16 years now but unfortunately this year Ryomaden was not shown. There was no Taiga Drama. I had so many favorites, with Atsuhime leading them. I look forward to “Gou”. Can you tell me where I might buy Ryomaden or any of the Taiga Dramas or what station I could possibly watch them on? Or can you tell me if they will be shown in the San Francisco, CA area at all this year or next? I miss them terribly. They are so beautifully done. I’m lost without them. Thank you for your time.
