The Imperial Residence sits on three and a half square kilometers of greenery that were once valued at more than all of the real estate in California.
Although several of the outer Imperial gardens are open to the public, the inner sanctum is off limits. Rumor has it that all sorts of once common, but since displaced, animals — such as tanuki, pheasant, fox and many rare species of birds — make their homes within its walls.
