On November 11, 2009, one Onsen facility opened in Shirahama Onsen. A new Onsen “TORETORE-NO-YU” or Big Catch Onsen is patronized mainly by day-trippers from nearby cities in Wakayama Prefecture. The new Onsen is owned and managed by a fishermen’s union named“The Katata Fishery Cooperative Society”. Is Onsen business really a “Big Catch” for fishermen?

Actually, it started as a small Onsen within a fish market named “TORETORE ICHIBA” or Big Catch Fish Market under the fishermen’s union. It had been very popular among visitors to the fish market, but was unable to serve for too large number of bathers rushed in. There was always long waiting line and bathers complained on its inconvenience. The fishermen’s union had no choice but constructing rather larger Onsen separately.

The new Onsen opened on the hill little faraway from the fish market in November last year and named “TORETORE-NO-YU”. The new bathhouse has a various kinds of bathing facilities such as inner bath, sauna bath, and popular outdoor bath. It has also a beauty-treatment clinic in spa area. The old bathhouse within the market was also kept under the new name “KATATA-NO-YU”.
