Metropolitan Area Expressway

Who but the Japanese would think to connect the major wards and neighborhoods of their capital with an ‘expressway’ that is perched several stories above ground and weaves in between office buildings and national landmarks?

The Shuto-ko — or ‘Metropolitan Area Expressway’ — is not only an engineering marvel but also a logistical nightmare, with countless routes that are all interconnected, above- and below-ground entrances and exits, and high-speed curves that would make the Nürburgring blush.
