A new airport in the Kanto(Tokyo and its surrounding area of  east  Japan) was set up on this Mar. 11th.  The name of the airport is “Ibaraki Airport”(/茨城空港) in Omitama City in Ibaraki pref. (80km Northeast of Tokyo).http://www.ibaraki-airport.net/en/index.html  20100312-059090-1-N

The new airport hosted its grand opening ceremony at 8:00am on the 11th. Hashimoto. the Ibaraki Governor, Shimada, the  Omitama Mayor ,and other people were invited, 20 animation characters’  performed at the event.

On the 11th about 8,000 people visited the facility, 1600 of which were actually passengers.  This airport is for shared use with SDF.  Currently the airlines that have participated in this new airport are Asiana Airlines of  Korea  (currently  the only one international airline to supply regular flights), Continental Airlines,Philippine Airlines,Lion Air, Shenzhen Airlines,  China Eastern Airlines, TransAsia Airways, Japan Airlines. More flights and airline carriers are expected to be participating  from now on.   Actually, every flight of the first  few days  there were almost  full, which is a good sign to imply the future success of  this new key traffic institution in the area.

As this new airport has geographical proximity to the central area of  Tokyo (It takes about 85 min. by car ),  Mito City(the capital Ibaraki pref.- it takes about  35min.) ,and other primary cities in Kanto area,  eventually this will be  one of the hub traffic centers contributing to enhancing  tourism in these areas.
