Fashion model Nozomi Sasaki (佐々木希) has her first starring role in a drama series, though it will unexpectedly be about sumo wrestling.
Tentatively titled “Dohyo Girl,” the story follows a young girl trying to save a high school sumo club from being abolished.
Sasaki plays a young woman Akira Wakabayashi who intimately familiar with the world of sumo wrestling. Her father was a sumo wrestler and she grew up surrounded by sumo wrestlers. But by her late teens, Akira cut all ties with the world of sumo wrestling and pursued a career as a fashion model. By accident, Wakabayshi then becomes the coach of a sumo wrestling club at a high school. The sumo club has only only one active member and is close to becoming abolished. It’s now up to Wakabayshi to rebuild the club …
Some of the male sumo club members will be recruited through this week’s issue of Weekly Young Jump. The series begins in July, airing at 12:50am on Tuesday nights on TBS.
