The late manga artist Fujio Akatsuka will have his story told in a film being released next year. Titled “Kore de Ii no da!! Eiga★Akatsuka Fujio,” the movie will star Tadanobu Asano (浅野忠信) as Akatsuka and Maki Horikita (堀北真希) as his editor.

The “King of Gag Comics”, Akatsuka was born in Manchuria, China, , but moved back to Japan with his mother after World War II. After graduating, Akatsuka got a job in a chemical company, which he hated. At the same time, he sent some of his manga to magazines until his ‘Arashio Koete’, was first published in 1955 in the magazine Manga Shoen. He gave up his day job and started to work under Tezuka as a resident of the Tokiwasou apartment building where he was the roommate of Ishinomori Shoutarou.

The story is based on a book written by Toshiki Takei, who actually served as Akatsuka’s editor at Shonen Sunday for a 10-year period. It covers the relationship between Akatsuka and Takei between 1967 and 1974. Although the rookie editor in the book is male, the character has been changed into a female for the movie.

Filming started on July 4 and will wrap up in early August. Theatrical release is scheduled for early summer 2011.
