When we talk about an Onsen in Shikoku, Matsuyama Dogo Onsen is the most popular of the area. It can be regarded as the leading hot springs in Japan. Not many others are so recognized in other three prefectures as in like Kochi, Tokushima, and Kagawa, because people in Shikoku are over-concentration to Dogo Onsen in Ehime.

Matsuyama Dogo Onsen is the most popular of the area. |
Onsen, is more popularly enjoyed, as a winter activity. An Onsen in Kochi prefecture is not helped by it being located, in the warm comfortable “Nangoku Tosa”(南国土佐) or southern island of Japan. But Shikoku Mountain Range sports many 2000 meters peaks, which at times by are covered snow, and its climate becomes quite severe in a mountainous region.
There are some Onsen hotels along Monobe and Namegawa rivers but they are not large enough to be able to form “onsengai”(温泉街)or spa town. “Higaeri-onsen”(日帰り温泉)or hot spring for day-trippers are also few in Kochi. The area is still underdeveloped as an Onsen market.
Harunocho is a farm town located over the hill, next to Kochi city after crossing over a 100m peak. We can enjoy seeing paddy fields and a long coast line facing to the Pacific Ocean. The hill is merely 100 meters high, but it is enough for the weather to change.
The site was formerly an old Medieval Period castle. |
Architect, Mr. Hiroshi Ebisawa tried to employ openness to outdoor as the basic concept of Onsen bathing. The outdoor Onsen located on a hill was formerly an old Medieval Period castle. Separate buildings are built for the reception and restaurant, bathing area and hotel rooms, forming a hilltop “fortress”.
A modernized “Nerikabe”or a diatomite mud and tile wall |
Traditional Tosa Plasterer-ship is fully utilized to create a modernized “Nerikabe” (練り壁)or a diatomite mud and tile wall which is topped with tiles. Two pieces of “Onigawara”(鬼瓦)or gargoyle are put on the both top of the façade.

Attractive outdoor bath and Spa zone. |
One of the most important schemes is the flow planning for both bathing and spa zone. The former must be used after taking one’s clothes off, and the latter is bathing-suit-required. It is skillfully designed with providing wide corridor and sand bath between women’s and men’s bath area
Attraction facilities are mostly located in the Spa zone also, to keep Onsen bathing areas a quite, peaceful, healing space.
The Onsen water is pumped up from1700 meters below, and contains 1500 mg/ℓ of chloride ion. There is equivalent to one half of the ocean water’s salt content which means Haruno-no-yu is becoming another source for deep seawater in Kochi prefecture.
