The Kitasato University temporary moves out from Sanriku town

The School of Marine Biosciences in Sanriku Campus

The Kitasato University decided to move out its school of marine biosciences temporary from Sanriku town in Ofunato. Although, its campus buildings are remained unhurt, necessities of life standard in the town was greatly damaged and students won’t be able to keep their normal condition. The school of marine biosciences will be transferred to their main campus in Sagamihara city in Kanagawa until 2015. However, it is still uncertain, when the school will come back to its original place.

About 570 students study at the school.

Most students in the school are confused on sudden movement just before starting of new school year. Local marine products industry is also deeply discouraged, that is now trying to recover from the disaster. Because the school has greatly contributed to the local marine industry through research and study activity based on the local marine products.

Its school facilities are located on the high ground back of the Yoshihama fishing port and about 570 students study at the school. Although, all facilities in the campus left unhurt, all rental rooms for students along the seaside area were washed away. The university faculty decided to transfer the school to their main campus in Sagamihara city for next five years from now. The school will restart at transferred campus just after long holiday season in May and now busy removing necessary educational tools and equipments from the Sanriku campus. A shuttle bus service supporting for students’ moving is provided daily between the Sanriku and Sagamihara campuses. All expenses related to the movement, including deposit and key money required for new rental in Sagamihara will be paid by the university.

‘Although, the amount of money for the movement will be 800 to 1,000 million yen, if its security of life is not kept, parents never send their sons and daughters to the school. We would like to watch out the reconstruction steps for deciding the expecting transfer back to the original campus in Sanriku.’ Mr. Naomitsu Endo, the director-general of the administrative affairs in the university expressed.

Kitasato University (北里大学,) is one of the famous private universities in Minato, Tokyo, Japan. The head of the university is located in the Shirokane Campus, neighboring the Kitasato Institute. Its major educational facilities are located in the Sagamihara Campus, located 60 kilometers west of central Tokyo. The departments include the School of Medicine, School of Allied Health Sciences, School of Pharmaceutical Studies, School of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Sciences, School of Marine Sciences, School of Nursing, and the School of Science. The school was named after Kitasato Shibasaburo.
