Whole line of Sanriku Railway will be restarted by April, 2014

Sanriku Railway Company has confirmed that its whole line of 107.6 km will be reconstructed and reopened by April 2014. The railway was greatly damaged by the tsunami on March 11. The reconstruction scheme was proposed at the general meeting of stockholders on July 15.

About 71.4 km which has been suspended, will be divided into three steps. Between Tanohata and Rikuchu-noda (24.3 km) on the North Rias Line will be reconstructed by April, 2012 as the first step. By April, 2013, between Sakari and Yoshihama (21.6 km) on the South Rias Line will be started, and between Yoshihama and Kamaishi (15 km) by April 2014 respectively. Durability against tsunami and earthquake, such as reinforcement of railroad edge with concrete placing and replacement of Torigoe Sation on the North Rias Line onto the higher ground, where was washed away by the tsunami, will be performed at the reconstruction scheme.

About 11 billion yen is estimated for the reconstruction. The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism now considers increasing of supporting rate from one fourth to three fourth. If the government supporting scheme is confirmed, the railway company will start reconstruction as soon as possible.

‘As a mission of public transportation company, we would like to provide measure of transportation for local residents as soon as possible.’ Mr. Masahiko Mochizuki, CEO, expressed. 317 points on the railway were damaged, including bridges and stations, and only a part of service on the North Rias Line has reopened.
