A popular sandwich shop ‘SANEN’ in Ohfunato Town

A popular sandwich shop ‘SANEN’ in Ohfunato Town was washed away by the tsunami on March 11. Some regular customers asked Ms. Hiroe Oikawa (37), the owner, to cook her sandwiches for their snack while engaged in the Star Festival. Ms. Oikawa and her old staff members cooked their favorite taste of sandwiches after a long time. She gropes for reopening of her shop again, in which a large number of regular customers had been eagerly waiting for.

150 packs of sandwiches were cooked and catered for people who were engaged in the Star Festival in Sakari Town. In response to one of her regular customers, she participated voluntarily to the festival by cooking them at his home kitchen.

‘It is no easy matter to prepare a large number of catering snacks because this is first cooking after the tsunami, but we could enjoy cooking. We appreciate their order.’ Ms. Oikawa looked really enjoyed cooking in about five months. Her old staff members, Mr. Akira Satou (37), Ms. Sakiko Satou (33), and Mr. Yoshikazu Hamada (26), who participated cooking, also made cheerful smiles.

‘SANEN’ had a good reputation for its variety of menu items in good taste.

Her sandwich shop ‘SANEN’ started business 9 years ago, and made a good reputation among local customers for its variety of menu items in good taste. However, the popular sandwich shop in front of JR Ohfunato station was completely washed away by the tsunami on March 11. Ms. Oikawa also lost her home in Ohfunato Town and was forced to live in her parents’ home in Sanriku Town. She has started working at a welfare facility in Ohfunato City in cooking meals for inmates since June. Her old staff members also could find other jobs.

In such situation, she is looking for a suitable place for her sandwich shop. ‘Although, I would like to reopen my sandwich shop again, I must work out finding a place with careful deliberation. I will start from scratch.’ She intends to step forward for reopening while enjoys cooking some items in her old menu.
