Two toy poodles became police dogs in Tottori
Two toy poodles became police dogs in Tottori Prefecture in January.
The female poodles — Karin, who turns 2, and 2-year-old Fuga — have appeared on television programs since they passed the police dog exam in November.
They debuted as police dogs in mid-January in Tottori prefectural police educational event on the emergency police number 110.
Their trainer Makoto Miyamoto said it takes three or four years for a police dog to master tracking scents.
“It’s best for them to get on-site work experience” to master police dog skills, he said.
Poodles, which are used as hunting dogs, carry out orders and learn quickly, according to Japan Kennel Club.
For now, two toy poodles have been busy going to police promotional events rather than perform police duties such as help in searches or investigations.
