The shortest escalator in the world
This escalator is listed by the Guinness Book of Records as “the shortest escalator in the world”. The number of steps is only 5.
There are stairs next to the elevator and it seems more efficient to use them. Some foreign people who saw the escalator have remarked how lazy Japanese people are, and wonder why Japanese people want to have escalators everywhere, even at places where they are not necessary.
Some say it was designed to force walkers keeping-right.
You can find it in an underground shopping area in Kawasaki station.

Visitors can also eat at a restaurant that serves noodle dishes from around the world, while children can experience the whole cup-noodle-making process from noodle preparation to the final shipment stage at a playground that mimics a factory.

“Reptile cafe” opens in Yokohama
A “reptile cafe,” offering customers the rare experience of observing exotic creatures while sipping Chinese tea, opened in Yokohama, southwest of Tokyo, in July, the latest addition to a rising number of Japanese cafes featuring animals, typically cats and rabbits.
At the “Reptile Cafe/Yokohama Subtropical Teahouse (爬虫類カフェ 横浜亜熱帯茶館) ” located in the port city’s Naka Ward, customers are able to observe around a dozen different species, totaling 40 in number. Kept in tanks and cages, they include a 1-meter-long lizard and a 1.7-meter-long snake.
“Unexpectedly, we have many female customers,” said Mutsumi Nagano, the 42-year-old manager of the cafe.
The customers are also able to pet land turtles, who the manager says are friendly, in a partitioned-off area, but customers are required to wash their hands on entering and leaving the area.

Hakone Tenzan; Women's Inner Bath
Open air design for “IKKYU” was quite successful, but in comparison, existed inner bath for women was traditionally designed and was seemed enclosed, stuffy, and obsolete. Bathers simply used it as warming their bodies before taking “NOTEN-BURO” or outdoor bath.
Architect, Mr. Hiroshi Ebisawa employed the same concept of “openness” used for the annex bathhouse “IKKYU.” An ordinal and mediocre old inner bath was completely redesigned and reconstructed in 1995.
New women’s inner bath was protruded to the outside next to the outdoor bath in half. You can enjoy feeling in outdoor while staying in an inner bath.
An “URUSHI-BURO” or old “HINOKI” cypress bath lacquered with japan was employed this time. The japan bathtub is maintenance free and can be used without weekly day off.

Hakone Tenzan, Annex Bathhouse “IKKYU”

Hakone Tenzan, Annex Bathhouse "IKKYU".
During the five years between the opening of expanded new Tenzan in 1987 and additional eating places in 1991, an important social and economy change in policy occurred. Since Japanese yen became stronger in 1885, the government had been encouraging consumers to spend their money domestically. In 1987, Resort Resolution was passed, which gave special tax exemption, to local governments to development of leisure resorts. Over 30 organizations jumped on the opportunity to develop resort hotels, golf courses, ski slopes, and onsen facilities. Read the rest of this entry »
