An old local house with a thatched roof which was built about 200 years ago is reused as the reception house

By Kikki - Last updated: 6月 17, 2012 at 8:57 pm

The new Japanese inn is consisted of two houses. One is the reception house that is a 200 years old house with a thatched roof. Another is newly built guest house. The old house is moved from Shizukuishi inIwatePrefectureand reconstructed here. It was owned by the Koiwazawa Family who served as ‘Shoya (庄屋)’ or a village headman in the Edo period. Although, all required reinforcement by the law and slight refurbishment is done, as well as an outward appearance of the old house, but also most of its interior layout kept unchanged. Especially its high ceiling lobby lounge built in two-story well-hole style is the best part of the reception house, where used to be an earthen floor.

First thing you can see soon after entering the inn is a two-story entrance hall built in wellhole style with an ‘Irori’ hearth. A 200 years old thatch- roofed old private house is reused as the reception house.

Had been used as a house for the village headman, there are several characteristic designs and symbols of good luck, such as a large household Shinto altar placed at an upper part of the well-hole, a mallet of luck, a decoration of pine tree-bamboo-Ume apricot, and crane and tortoise. So, guest can enjoy being stay in a traditional atmosphere in the old house.

The front desk is located at the inner part in the reception house. A check-in procedure is performed here or at the lobby area around ‘Irori’ hearth.

The lobby lounge, furnished with an ‘Irori (囲炉裏)’ or a traditional sunken hearth and a set of sofa, is used as a public area for room guests. A cup of powdered green tea with a Japanese sweet is served here to arrival guest as a welcome drink.

Special event for folktales in Kakunodate is expected to be performed in a Japanese style hall.

It is also used as a small library, so there are various monthly and weekly magazines and books for their guests. Furthermore, at the evening between 8:00 and 10:00, a Japanese sake bar ‘Irori Lounge’ is opened here.

Japanese Sake Bar ‘Irori Lounge’ is open at the lounge between 20:00 and 22:00. ‘Kikizake Set’ is 1,050 yen, which is consisted of three brands of local rice wine and ‘Iburigakko’ or assorted local pickles. On the back shelf, 16 brands of local rice wine are lined up. The back shelf is totally closed in normal hours.

Irori (囲炉裏) is a type of traditional sunken hearth common in Japan. Used for heating the home and cooking food, it is essentially square pit in the floor with a pot hook, or jizaikagi (自在鉤). These hooks generally were hollow bamboo tubes containing an iron rod, with an attached lever, often shaped like a fish that would allow the pot or kettle to be raised or lowered.

A small inn with only 10 guestrooms opened as a base station for sending information on historical and cultural town of Kakunodate

By Kikki - Last updated: 6月 10, 2012 at 4:51 pm

New Style Resort Inn with a traditional old building and an original local dish

On August 10, 2011, a new type resort inn, ‘Kakunodate-sanso WABIZAKURA’ newly opened in the historical castle town ‘Kakunodate’.  The new inn with only 10 guestrooms is located in a ’Satoyama(里山)’ about 15 minutes drive from the heart of Kakunodate.

‘Kakunodate-sanso WABIZAKURA’ is consisted of two areas, a private old residence reused as a reception house and newly built two guest houses. The new inn is quietly stand in a remote Satoyama (里山) or a border zone between mountain foothills and arable flat land.

Satoyama (里山) is a Japanese term applied to the border zone or area between mountain foothills and arable flat land. Literally, sato () means arable and livable land or home land, and yama () means mountain. Satoyama which ha been developed through centuries of small scale agricultural and forestry use, also promise biodiversity if properly maintained by human activities.

Kakunodate is one of towns so-called ‘Little Kyoto’ in Japan

A local town ‘Kakunodate’,SenbokuCityin a center ofAkitaPrefectureis well known as one of the towns popularly called ‘Little-Kyoto’ inJapan. It was the largest castle town in the Akita-han or theAkitafeudal clan which was founded by Yoshikatsu Ashina about 390 years ago. The administrative division of that period has still remained in the town which is divided into ‘Tomachi’ orOuterTownin the South and ‘Uchimachi’ orInnerTownin the North. Most general citizens, including merchants, were lived in ‘Tomach’ and on the other hand, ‘Samurai’ or local rulers were in ‘Uchimachi’. In the ‘Uchimachi’, there are still several 200 years old residences remained where ‘Samurai’ had lived. The district with a group of these old residences is designated as the Historically Significant Traditional Buildings Perseveration Area by the Japanese Government.

Although number of arrivals inSenbokuCitycounts over 4.6 million people in a year, only less than 670 thousands stay overnight. Actually, there are only seven accommodations in Kakunodate area. The most tourists come to Kakunodate town just for sightseeing and tend to stay overnight in nearby hot spring resorts in Iawate Prefecture, such as Tsunagi Onsen and Hanamaki Onsen, instead. So Kakunodate is rather considered as only a sightseeing spot for day trippers without stay overnight or just a transit type sightseeing point. Opening of the new inn in the town is expected to help promoting sightseeing of Kakunodate.

Will parodies be widely accepted ? – Japanese Government looks into copyrights law

By Tenkaijapan - Last updated: 6月 10, 2012 at 11:44 am

Japanese goverment decided on June 6 that they would evaluate the place of parody in Japanese copyright law.

As Japanese law currently stands, no special provisions are made for parody works. A strict reading of the law would deem parody as a violation of copyright owners’ “right to maintain integrity,” making parody potentially illegal without the prior consent of copyright owners. Small trip to Kyoto Part 1 Temple

By Yuka - Last updated: 5月 28, 2012 at 8:45 am

I went to Kyoto for sightseeing for 2days.

I do love Kyoto because I can feel Japanese tradition and Japanese beauty.

I’ve been there more than five times.

This time of a year, new green leaves are very beautiful.

Combination of temple and flesh green leaves is great.

The temple that most impressive in this trip(禅林寺・Zenrin-ji temple) is famous as red maple leaves spot in fall.

But I think this another sight should be more remarked;D

The white temple wall reflects sunlight through new green leaves

While taking bath in ‘Private Spa in the Forest’, you are completely free without any disturbance from other bathers

By Kikki - Last updated: 5月 27, 2012 at 5:43 pm

‘Mori-no-Private Spa’ is consisted of three different types of bathhouses. ‘Gingetsu’ is a Japanese style, ‘FU-RO’ is an Indonesian Bali style, and ‘Rinsen’ is a Chinese style, and each has an outdoor bath, a Ganban-yoku (hot stone bath) and a quiet resting area. When you make reservation, you can choose among them. Additional charge of 8,000 yen per room is required for 70 minutes (up to 4 guests). Although, maximum 6 guests can share the bathhouse, additional 1,000 yen per guest is required in this case.

‘Gingetsu’ is spaciously built open to the natural forest. It is something like a thatched hut in a mountain village. Relax yourself in the traditional Japanese interior. A gentle breeze brings you a soft tone of sound from nature which is comfortable to your ears. Soak deeply your body in an open air bath and enjoy seeing a large 165,000㎡beautiful landscape garden just in front of the bathhouse, or spend pleasant period in a ‘Ganban-yoku’ hot stone bath.

It is a good experience taking bath in ‘Private Spa In the Forest’.

‘Ganban-buro’ hot stone bath

A couch style ‘Ganban-buro’ hot stone bath is good for easy bathing. You can observe beautiful outside greenery scenery while taking ‘Ganabanyoku’. The wall of hot stone bath is kneaded with ‘Binchotan’ charcoal, and germanium and ‘Tenju-seki’ (one of the Korean natural stones) are used for a special seat in the bathroom.*Two guests can share the ‘Ganban-buro’ at the same time.

Living area

A straight line and refined appearance of the living area is decorated with abundant natural materials in a peculiar Japanese sense. A comfortable and specious interior attracts all bathers.

The ceiling of the bathhouse is decorated with plenty of bamboo which makes a full mood ofBaliatmosphere. Well illuminated interior decoration of bamboo and its quiet atmosphere in the room is wonderful, and the murmuring of flowing hot spring water is absorbed into the landscape garden. Please enjoy authentic Balinese atmosphere with something exotic feeling while taking a bath in ‘FU-RO’.

 ‘Ganban-buro’ hot stone bath

Sprawl out style ‘Ganban-buro’ makes your whole body really comfortable. You never feel oppressed but feel rather spacious in the hot stone bath, because of its wide framed glass windows. Maifan Stone, also known as ‘bakuhanseki (麦飯石)’, is used for ‘Ganban-buro’ which is a special mineral rock used in Chinese medicine to treat various skin diseases. Maifan Stone stimulates perspiration which is good for maintaining your health, especially makes your skin smoother. Two guests can share the ‘Ganban-buro’ at the same time.

Living area

Bamboo ceiling and each piece of furnishings in the living area are quite exotic. As well as enjoy taking bath in a characteristic Balinese style bath, you can make yourself comfortable in a quiet moment in the spacious living area.

The wall piled up with nostalgic Chinese type bricks which had been very common inShanghaiabout 100 years ago are tender to your feeling and really a sweet pleasure to gaze upon. Feel a breeze blows over greenery forest in Mother Nature, and enjoy a pleasant and elegant moment in an olden Chinese style bathhouse.

‘Ganban-buro’ hot stone bath

You feel really comfortable while taking hot stone bath in sprawl out style ‘Ganban-buro’. Maifan Stone, also known as ‘Bakuhanseki (麦飯石)‘, is used for ‘Ganban-buro’ which resembles to a piece of rice ball mixed with barley in shape. Two guests can share the ‘Ganban-buro’ at the same time.

Living area

Interior is decorated in Chinese style which is peculiar among countries in Asia. An authentic furnishing of the living area charms especially female bathers.
